Report on 2011 competition
Regrettably it was not possible to hold the usual drawing competition in 2011 because the Nota Gallery closed down. It was therefore decided to accept an invitation from Realidades, an NGO based in Sucre, to support a drawing competition open to working boys, girls and adolescents who are registered in the following occupations: cleaning shoes, washing cars, selling newspapers, laying tiles and bricks on construction sites, acting as guides in cemeteries, and similar work. The purpose of the competition was to give all these young people the opportunity to participate in an event organized specially for them and for them to have their work exhibited. Additionally it was hoped that the event would create an awareness of child labour.
106 young people participated, 18 received prizes and the exhibition travelled from August to November 2011 to different private and public schools and libraries in the area of the Department of Sucre.
Additionally, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) decided to open their 2011 cultural programme with an exhibition in memory of Fernando. Accordingly an exhibition of his drawings was held, supported by a documentary which they commissioned and which was shown throughout the exhibition. It was decided that the Fernando Montes Art Fund would take advantage of this opportunity by inviting to the private view all artists who were awarded prizes or distinctions in the previous drawing competitions of the Fund. A panel discussion on drawing was also held to which all artists who participated in previous drawing competitions were invited. The panellists were established Bolivian artists and art historians. The panel discussion, which was well attended, took place in CAF's auditorium. A number of artists from the drawing competitions participated in the discussion.
