An exciting achievement of this year’s competition was the fact that participants come from several regions of Bolivia, including Potosí, Tarija, Cochabamba and Oruro as well as La Paz, of course. This means that the competition has achieved recognition across the country and is now receiving national press and radio coverage. The newspaper La Razon published an article about the competition in its supplement Tendencias on the 26th April.
The competition took place in April this year at Galería Alternativa, one of the most prestigious art galleries in La Paz. With an exhibition of drawings by the winners and selected artists from 21st April to 5th May.
114 artists submitted their works. After careful consideration and debate, taking into consideration the diversity of the themes, the jury selected 50 works for the exhibition and of these 31 were reproduced in the catalogue. The Fund is very grateful to SOLYDES for sponsoring the high quality catalogue once again.
This year the jury comprised Bolivian artists Alfredo La Placa, Fabricio Lara, Guiomar Mesa and Javier Fernández and the Spanish art historian, Margarita Vila. The first prize of US$1000, chosen by majority vote, was awarded to Ana Laura Navarro; the second prize of US$500, again chosen by majority vote, went to Vidal Cussi. Libertad Antezana, Adda Donato, Jesús Dayvis Huanca Limachi, José Luis Mamani Córdova, Douglas Rivera and Boris Saravia Miranda were commended for their submissions and received diplomas.
In their report, which is published in the catalogue, the members of the jury state that they had to apply rigorous criteria to select the works. They considered most of the submissions to be of a very high standard. Regrettably, due to space limitations, only 50 drawings could be exhibited.
As reported earlier a number of artists who took part in earlier competitions are doing well in their careers. This year Douglas Riviera, who won the second prize last year, was invited by the Municipality of La Paz to exhibit in the Museo Tambo Quirquincho.
Once again, the Fund thanks all who have made this possible with their support and contributions.
