In his introduction to this year’s catalogue Dr. Eduardo Quintanilla remarks how the competition continues to attract large numbers of artists and encourages the practice and development of creativity in this technique.
This year 112 artists submitted entries to the competition. Once again, artists from several regions of Bolivia took part. We are very pleased that the competition is now a national annual event.
The competition took place in April at Galería Alternativa, one of the most prestigious art galleries in La Paz. The exhibition of drawings by the winners and selected artists ran from the 10th to the 23rd May.
The jury was composed of the distinguished Bolivian artists Alfredo La Placa, Fabricio Lara, Guiomar Mesa, Alejandro Salazar, and the Spanish art historian, Margarita Vila. After careful consideration and debate, they selected 55 works for the exhibition; of these 34 were chosen for reproduction in the catalogue.
The first prize of US$1,000, chosen by majority vote, was awarded to Reynaldo Javier González; the second prize of US$500, again chosen by majority vote, went to Richard Sánchez while Deivy Choquehaunca, Jhonattan Chuquimia, Tatiana López, José Tito Condori, Luis Manuel Mora Pozo and Douglas Rivera were commended for their submissions and received diplomas.
Special thanks go to the members of the jury, to the Galería Alternativa and to the artists for their commitment to the competition. We are also very grateful to SOLYDES for their continued sponsorship of the high quality catalogue.
Many of the previous prize winners are now professional artists who continue to develop their art. Of particular note are Rosmery Mamani-Ventura and Juan José Serrano.
Rosemary won 1st Prize in the 2008 Drawing Competition, and is now an established artist. She has travelled to the USA, Spain and France to exhibit her work and has won numerous prizes, most recently 1st Prize in the II International Biennial of Pastel in Oviedo, Spain in 2013. This year she had a solo exhibition in Galería Merida Romero, a premier art gallery in La Paz.
Juan participated in the Drawing Competition in 2008 and 2009, winning 2nd Prize in 2010. He is also an established artist, and has held several solo exhibitions of his work in La Paz and Santa Cruz, and group shows in Argentina, Germany, Spain and the USA. He won the Public Prize at the 9th Print Triennial in Chamalières, France in 2014. Juan José and his wife, the artist Isabel Blacut, who has also taken part in the Competitions, have established a workshop in La Paz where they teach. He also has a blog (https://juanjosesc.blogspot.co.uk/), which is well worth visiting.
Fernando’s widow expresses her heartfelt thanks to all who have made this possible with their contributions and to those who continue to support the competition.
