Report on 2018 competition
In 2018 the Fund celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the drawing competition “El Valor del Dibujo Fernando Montes-Peñaranda”.

During the opening of the exhibition, Marcela Montes spoke about the friends who gave encouragement for the launch of the project especially Alfredo La Placa, artist, and Fernando Romero, patron of the arts In the introduction to the first catalogue, Romero said “based on two of his principles, first that a good painting is born from a good drawing and second that there are many more artists than the ones that achieve recognition, because they do not find the opportunity, Montes always thought that a small contribution would be to organize exhibitions of young artists that have not been recognised yet.”  Here was born the idea of a family foundation in his memory. Also present was Norah Claros who, as Director of the Gallery Nota, supported the project and for three years until she retired, hosted the exhibitions of the drawing competition at her gallery.

The introduction for this year’s catalogue was written by Margarita Vila, an Art Historian who has been a supporter and member of the Jury since the beginning of the project. She said this event is now considered the most prestigious drawing competition in Bolivia.  The excellent standard of the entries to the competition is encouraged by the members of the jury who have always been prestigious Bolivian artists.  The Fund is grateful to  Alfredo La Placa, Fabricio Lara, Guiomar Mesa, Patricia Mariaca, Edgar Arandia, Pablo Viracocha, Keiko Ganzalez, Javier Fenandez, Miguer Yaput and Alejandro Salazar.

During these 10 years 1004 artists have submitted work.  From those 500 were selected for exhibition. These artists have come not only from the capital La Paz, but also from El Alto, Cochabamba, Oruro, Potosi, Sucre and Tarija. 10 of them received the First Prize, 10 the Second Prize and 41 a special diploma.

During these 10 years the Foundation Solydes has generously sponsored the Catalogue and Vincent Harris has made and updated the website fernandomontesartfund.org. For the last seven years the exhibitions have taken place in the Galeria Alternativa Centro de Arte.

This year’s catalogue included a section with the reproductions of the works of the winners from the last ten years.

The first prize of US$1,500, chosen by majority vote, was awarded to Cathy Jimena Guibarra; the second prize of US$750, again chosen by majority vote, went to Olga García Rojas.  Marvin Ramiro Lanza Costa, Victor Marcelo Calle, Corina Aguilar, Rubén Héctor Perales and Jaime Achocalla were commended for their submissions and received diplomas.

Fernando’s widow again extends her heartfelt thanks to all of you who have made this possible through their support and contributions.
