Under the leadership of Hugo Montes and the directors of the gallery, the Fifth Competition “El Valor del Dibujo Fernando Montes-Peñaranda” took place in April 2013 at Galería Alternativa, one of the most prestigious art galleries in La Paz. 113 artists participated and the exhibition of the selected work ran from 23rd April to 3rd May.

The Bolivian artists Alfredo La Placa, Fabricio Lara, Giomar Mesa and Mílguer Yapur, and Spanish art historian Margarita Vila kindly agreed to serve on the jury judging the entries.  The prizes, chosen by majority vote, were awarded to Roly Huanca Huari (first prize) Santiago Jr. Ayala Cruz (second prize),  Gebracia Aruquipa, Vidal Cussi, Javier del Carpio, Aldo Quelka and José Tito Condori were all commended for their submissions and received diplomas.

In view of the quality of entries and the diversity of the subject matter and techniques employed, the jury decided to include 55 works in the exhibition and 26 in the catalogue.  The Fund is very grateful to SOLYDES for once again sponsoring the catalogue.

The competition now receives national press coverage. On 12th May, La Razón, the national daily, devoted a double page spread of its Sunday supplement “Tendencias-Arte” to the prize and reproduced the winning entries from this and previous years. The article highlighted the importance of the competition in promoting the careers of young artists since 2008.  In their first issue of May 2013, Nueva Crónica, a bimonthly political and cultural magazine, carried an article on this year’s competition, illustrated throughout with drawings from the exhibition,

Marcela Montes Montes, Fernando’s widow, commented that she was very pleased to see that many artists who have taken part in the competitions are now progressing well in their careers.

This year’s winners and runners-up can be seen by clicking here and their portfolios can be seen by clicking here. Comments on the winning entries are welcomed by email to Marcela (marcela@fernandomontes.co.uk)

The Fund sends its heartfelt thanks to all of you who have made this possible especially the artists and the many people who who continue to support the Prize.
