2014 was a very exciting year, not only for participants in the sixth drawing competition “El Valor del Dibujo Fernando Montes-Peñaranda”, but also for the winners of previous competitions.
The sixth competition took place in April this year at Galería Alternativa, one of the most prestigious art galleries in La Paz. The exhibition of the winners and selected artists ran from 29th April to 19th May and was part of the Long Night of Museums on 17th May, an annual art festival organised by the Municipality of La Paz when all galleries and museums remain open till midnight. Music performances and art demonstrations are held in the streets and there is an exuberant festival atmosphere. Thousands of people visit the exhibitions.
132 artists submitted their works. After careful consideration and debate and in view of the high standard of the work, the jury selected 50 works for the exhibition and of these 30 were reproduced in the catalogue. We are very grateful to SOLYDES for sponsoring the high quality catalogue again.
This year the jury comprised Bolivian artists Fabricio Lara, Guiomar Mesa, Javier Fernández, Mílguer Yapur and Spanish art historian Margarita Vila. The first prize of US$1000, chosen by majority vote, was awarded to Juan Carlos Caizana; the second prize of US$500, again chosen by majority vote, went to Douglas Rivera. Oscar Zalles, Rosemari Mamani Machaca, Ana Laura Navarro and Vidal Cussi were all commended for their submissions and received diplomas.
The competition is now receiving national press and radio coverage. Nueva Crónica, a fortnightly political and cultural magazine, carried an article on this year’s competition in their first June edition. On its cover it reproduced the drawing by Douglas Rivera, winner of the 2nd prize. The rest of its articles were illustrated with 19 reproductions of drawings from this year’s competition.
It is rewarding to see that a number of artists who took part in earlier competitions are doing well in their careers. Rosemary Mamani Ventura, winner of the first competition, has exhibited in Spain, Paris and Taiwan. Juan José Serrano had a solo exhibition this year in the Galería Mérida Romero, another prestigious gallery in La Paz. Douglas Rivera, winner of the 2nd prize in this year’s drawing competition, subsequently won first prize in the LXII Salon Municipal de Artes Plásticas Pedro Domingo Murillo 2014. This is the most prestigious art competition in Bolivia, open to all artists in all techniques. This young 22 year old artist won first prize with a painting.
The Municipality of La Paz presented a large exhibition of the work of Fernando in the beautiful XVII century Tambo Quirquincho Museum and also agreed to exhibit the winning entries of the first five drawing competitions. together with a more recent work of the prize winners. On the Long Night of Museums 8,000 people visited both Fernando’s exhibition and the prize winners’ show and the event was featured on national television.
The Fund is very grateful to all who have made this possible with their donations and continuing support.
